Flat Clearance in Upper Holloway N19 – Mattress, Television and Furniture Case Study

The Clearance and Access

Small does not mean simple. Four items came out of this flat and two of them decided where the whole load went. A CRT television is classified as hazardous electrical waste — the leaded glass in the tube is why — so it cannot be tipped in with general rubbish and has to reach a facility permitted to take it. Mattresses are handled separately too: they compact badly and most transfer stations run them on their own line.

The rest was the carry. A converted Victorian flat means a communal staircase with a turn in it and no lift, and a mattress does not bend around a half-landing. Three operatives meant one steering from below while two took the weight on the turn — nothing dragged, nothing scraped past a neighbour's door. Responsible Disposal

The load was collected within the London Borough of Islington and taken to a licensed recycling and waste transfer station. So the load was split rather than tipped as one: the television to a facility permitted to handle electrical waste, the mattress onto its own line, the rest into the general stream. The Result

Four items, one visit, and the pavement outside the flat left completely clear — the after photograph is the same doorway with nothing in front of it. Nothing sat on the street waiting for a council bulky collection slot, and the television and mattress went down routes a skip could not have taken them.
