The Clearance and Access

Sixteen bags of hedge cuttings is the simplest material we handle. What made this job was the route. The garden sits at lower ground level, reached by a metal staircase, and the way out is back up that staircase, about ten metres through the flat, and down the front steps to the van. Three stages, and every bag makes all three.

Green waste is heavier than it looks, too. A bag of wet cuttings, brambles and root-bound soil weighs several times what a bag of household rubbish does, which is what turns a short route into a slow one. Bags went up one at a time rather than two, the staircase was kept clear between trips, and nothing was set down inside the flat. The van outside is a fourteen cubic yard caged tipper — worth knowing, because when anyone quotes you "a quarter van load", fourteen is the number it is a quarter of. Responsible Disposal

The load was collected within the London Borough of Hackney and taken to a licensed recycling and waste transfer station. Bagged green waste is one of the cleanest loads there is, provided nothing else has been dropped in with it — and nothing had, which is why it could go for recycling as a single clean stream rather than being sorted first. The Result

The bagged waste was gone the same day, with the lawn left as it was and one folded sheet by the wall. Nothing was carried back down, and nothing was left standing in a lower ground garden where it would have sat until somebody made a second trip for it.
