The Clearance and Access

Access could not have been simpler: the load was already out at street level, steps from the van. Two operatives, one short carry, no stairs. What mattered was not the lifting but the clock. Waste stacked on a public footway is deposited on the highway, and while it sits there it is somebody's liability — a duty of care does not pause because a collection is booked. Hackney can issue a fixed penalty notice. A pavement stacked with boards also obstructs anyone with a wheelchair or pushchair.

Nor was it the mixed household rubbish it was booked as. It was almost entirely wood, in two grades that cannot travel together. Bare ply and chipboard is clean wood — chipped and remanufactured into board, or burned for energy. Painted boards are coated wood, a separate grade, because paint off a period property may be lead-based: lead paint was only banned for domestic use in 1992. Responsible Disposal

The load was collected within the London Borough of Hackney and taken to a licensed recycling and waste transfer station. The clean sheet material and the painted timber were separated at the pile, not tipped together, which is the approach set out on our responsible rubbish clearance page.
