The Clearance and Access

The heaviest thing in this pile was not the futon. It was the brown panels leaning against it: chipboard that had been rained on. Dry chipboard is manageable. Soaked, it can be several times the weight and it crumbles at the edges as you lift it, so it has to go flat and in pairs rather than be dragged. It is also the reason weight cannot be judged from a photograph the way volume can — the same panels dry would have been a different job.

The rest of it tells you this was not one household's clear-out. A futon, renovation offcuts, a bag of filler, a doormat: that is an accumulation, and accumulations against estate railings grow. One item left out reads as permission, and within a week there is a pile. Which is why on a job like this the after photograph matters more than the size of the load. Responsible Disposal

The load was collected within the London Borough of Hackney and taken to a licensed recycling and waste transfer station. Timber and the metal frame were separated wherever possible, and the futon mattress handled on its own line rather than tipped with the general load — the separation set out on our responsible rubbish clearance page. The Result

The pavement was clear in a single visit — the after photograph is the same stretch of railings with nothing against it and the residents' flowers still in their pots by the door. That is the real result here: not only the load gone, but the spot no longer looking like somewhere to leave things.
