Furniture Removal in Islington N1 – Sofa Removal from a Converted Warehouse Apartment

MM Rubbish Clearance removed a dismantled three-piece sofa from a converted warehouse apartment near City Road and the Regent's Canal, Islington N1. The building had a passenger lift, but not one section of the sofa would fit inside it. Everything came down several long flights of stairs to the courtyard.

The Clearance and Access

"Is there a lift?" is the wrong question on a job like this. The building had one, and not a single section of the sofa would go into it. What decides a furniture collection is not whether a lift exists but whether the item fits — a three-seater base is around two metres long and will not pivot inside a lift car built for people and shopping.

So it came down the stairs. The flights were long but wide, which is the saving grace of a converted warehouse: enough room on the half-landings to turn a two-metre base without standing it on end against a neighbour's front door. The sofa was dismantled into base, back, sides and cushions before anything moved, and with three operatives two carried while the third cleared the route and held doors. Responsible Disposal

The load was collected within the London Borough of Islington and taken to a licensed recycling and waste transfer station. Upholstered seating is handled differently from other furniture. Sofas and armchairs are assumed to contain persistent organic pollutants in their foam and fabric, so since 2023 they have to be kept separate from other waste rather than landfilled or recycled with it — the sofa sections were separated from the timber frame components accordingly, in line with the approach on our responsible rubbish clearance page. The Result

The courtyard was cleared in one visit, with the sofa out of the flat and away without a mark on the communal stairs. The after photograph is the same spot with only the estate bins left standing in it.
