When a large dining table is too big for a building's lift, it can usually be dismantled where it stands and taken down in sections. That is what we did on Saturday 10 October 2026 in an apartment building just off Sloane Street, SW1X: a solid wood dining table that looked large and awkward in the customer's photographs turned out to weigh an estimated 80 kg. It could not be turned through the corridor or fitted into the lift, so our operative took it apart and removed it, with two chairs, in a single visit as part of our furniture removal in London service.

Weight was only part of the problem. The corridor ceiling in the building was too low to tilt and turn a table of this size without risking contact with the ceiling, walls or decorated finishes. Even if it had made it along the corridor, it would not have fitted in the building's lift in one piece.
Forcing a large table through a tight route is how walls, door frames and lift interiors get damaged, so it was not an option.
Our collection vehicles carry a toolbox, because large furniture often turns out to need dismantling once we arrive. Our operative separated the table into its main sections โ top, leaves, legs and side rails โ then moved each part along the corridor and into the lift one at a time.
Breaking it down also meant no single piece came close to the full estimated 80 kg. That is what let one person complete the removal safely without forcing anything through the building.
Photos are the best way to get a quick, fixed quote. They show size, condition and quantity well. They cannot show how heavy a solid wood item is, or whether it will clear a particular corridor, doorway or lift.
We allocated one operative to this job based on the photographs. Having done it, our view is that a solid wooden dining table of this size should be treated as a possible two-person lift whenever its weight cannot be checked before we arrive. That is how we will plan similar collections from now on.

Large dining tables, wardrobes and bed frames often need dismantling before they can leave an apartment building. Before booking, it helps to check:
If an item will not fit in the lift safely, we will dismantle it before taking it away. Telling us in advance helps us bring the right crew.
Loading options on this stretch of Sloane Street were very limited, with controlled parking and double yellow lines outside the building.
Some apartment buildings in the area have rear courtyards or service entrances where a van may be allowed to load. This building has rear vehicle access, but we could not use it because the person who opens the entrance was not available on the day.
If you live near Sloane Street, ask your concierge, building manager or gatekeeper before the collection whether a van can use a private courtyard, loading bay or service entrance. Knowing this in advance can shorten the carry and the loading time considerably.
The two chairs were still in usable condition, so we donated them to a local charity for reuse instead of treating them as waste. The table was collected within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and taken to a licensed waste transfer station that recycles it, in line with our responsible rubbish clearance approach. A digital Waste Transfer Note was issued, as it is after every collection. This was a small furniture collection, but it shows that access information can matter as much as the amount being removed. A table that looks simple in a photo becomes a more technical job once weight, lift size, ceiling height and parking restrictions are taken into account.
The lesson for us: treat a large solid wood table as a possible two-person lift when its weight is unknown, and carry the tools to dismantle it. Being able to adapt on site meant the job was finished in one visit instead of being abandoned at the lift door.
Send us photos of the furniture and the route out โ with your postcode, floor number, lift size if you know it, and any parking or loading details โ and we will come back with a fixed quote.
