Rubbish Removal in Monument EC3R โ€“ Restaurant Cardboard Off a Cobbled Lane

MM Rubbish Clearance collected delivery packaging from a restaurant on Lovat Lane, Monument EC3R. Cardboard boxes, a bag of packing paper and a broom had been stacked in front of the gateway. A small pile โ€” and it took an hour and twenty minutes, which is the story of working in the City.

Project Snapshot

  • Location: Lovat Lane, Monument EC3R
  • Local authority: City of London

  • Property type: Restaurant on a narrow historic lane
  • Customer type: Commercial
  • Items removed: Cardboard delivery boxes, a bag of crumpled packing paper, mixed commercial packaging and a broom

  • Crew: Two operatives
  • Turnaround: Single visit, around 1 hour 20 minutes on site
  • Access: Street level with a few internal steps; no vehicle access to the lane, so the load went out on foot through the side streets and covered walkways
  • Parking: No stopping on the lane โ€” the van stood at the nearest legal place

The Clearance and Access

Lovat Lane is cobbled, and that is not scenery, it is the job. Nothing wheels across setts: a bin on castors judders and tips, a sack barrow catches every joint. So it leaves the way loads have always left these lanes โ€” carried, an armful at a time. The van could not stop on the lane either: it stood at the nearest legal place, and every armful went out on foot through the side streets. Eighty minutes on site, for a pile two people would otherwise clear in twenty.

The other thing about EC3R is the council. The City of London is its own authority rather than a London borough, built around a daytime population rather than a resident one. That has an edge for a restaurant: there is no household service to fall back on. Delivery cardboard from a kitchen is commercial waste whatever it looks like, it cannot go out with a neighbour's domestic recycling, and every load needs a Waste Transfer Note behind it. Responsible Disposal

The load was collected within the City of London and taken to a licensed recycling and waste transfer station. Dry cardboard is the most recoverable waste a kitchen produces, and packing paper goes with it, so this was close to a single clean stream โ€” the approach set out on our responsible rubbish clearance page. The boxes had not been flattened, so they were broken down first. A Waste Transfer Note was issued. MM Rubbish Clearance is an Environment Agency upper-tier waste carrier, licence CBDU418527.

The Result

The gateway was clear in a single visit, with the step, planter and railings untouched. The pile had been standing in front of a gate people use โ€” which on a lane this narrow matters more than its size.
