The Clearance and Access

The load itself was straightforward: cardboard, wrapping and bags, already grouped in one corner of the courtyard, no stairs and nothing to bring out of a building. Flattened properly it takes a fraction of the space it occupies standing, which is why the volume as photographed and the volume as loaded are two different numbers.

Reaching it is the actual job. The streets around Hoxton Square run one-way and the courtyard has a single entrance — miss it and you are doing another circuit of Pitfield Street and Old Street before you can try again. So the approach is worked out before the van moves rather than on arrival. A shared courtyard also raises something a private driveway does not: the waste belongs to several occupiers at once, and where any of it is a business's, that business needs paperwork showing where it went. Responsible Disposal

The load was collected within the London Borough of Hackney and taken to a licensed recycling and waste transfer station. A load this cardboard-heavy is mostly recoverable, so the packaging and boxes were kept separate from the general bagged waste rather than tipped as one — the approach set out on our responsible rubbish clearance page. The Result

The courtyard was back to bare setts in a single visit — the after photograph is the same corner with nothing left in it. In a shared space that matters more than it does at a private address: once a pile stops being any one occupier's problem it becomes everybody's, and it grows until somebody clears it.
