The Clearance and Access

Carpet is one of the more awkward loads in this trade, and nothing like the cardboard a commercial clearance usually means. It is heavy, it does not break down, old underlay holds dust and damp, and a rolled length has to be carried whole by two people rather than compressed into a barrow. The pile here also sat directly across a residential entrance and a bin store, so it was not somewhere the contractor could leave it while they finished the job.

That is what the crew size was for. Three operatives meant one working the pile, two carrying rolls out to the van in pairs, and no roll ever set down halfway. Loading was on-street with restricted parking, and the photographs were taken after dark — a communal entrance is easier to clear when residents are not walking through it. Responsible Disposal

The load was collected within the London Borough of Lewisham and taken to a licensed recycling and waste transfer station. Carpet and underlay are among the harder materials to recycle, so the load was segregated on arrival and diverted from landfill where possible rather than quoted at a recycling percentage — our responsible rubbish clearance page explains how we handle materials like this. The Result
