MM Rubbish Clearance removed old storage heaters from a third-floor flat in a block on Lavina Grove, off York Way near King's Cross, N1. There was no lift, so two operators took the heavy bricks out of each heater and carried the bricks and casings down the stairs by hand. Parking near the block is almost non-existent unless you can use its own car park.
We do, including from upper floors with no lift. Old storage heaters are some of the heaviest household appliances we collect, because of the bricks packed inside them.

You take it apart first. A storage heater is a metal case packed with dense bricks that hold the heat overnight. With the bricks inside, it is far too heavy and awkward to carry safely down a stairwell.
On Lavina Grove, our two operators opened each heater and lifted the bricks out. They stacked the bricks on the landing on dust sheets, to protect the floor. The empty casings and the bricks were then carried down the three flights by hand in manageable loads. It is slow, labour-intensive work, and that is worth knowing before you book.

A storage heater is electrical equipment, so its casing and internals are handled as WEEE (waste electrical equipment), not general rubbish. Very old storage heaters can contain asbestos insulation, so tell us the age or model when you ask for a quote. The load was collected within the London Borough of Islington and taken to a licensed recycling and waste transfer station. A digital Waste Transfer Note was issued under our Environment Agency registration CBDU418527 (Carrier Dealer – Upper Tier).
Around York Way, parking is almost non-existent unless you can use the block's own car park. If the van can't stop close by, every brick and casing has a longer walk after the stairs. Customers should mention parking when they ask for a quote. Anyone pricing a job like this should check it before giving a figure: a third floor, no lift and storage heater bricks already make for a heavy, slow job.
